Sam Whelan is the host of Sam Stays Inside, a live show on Sheridanlife Radio
I always wanted to be a radio DJ. When I was a kid in the car I loved listening to the radio, hearing what was next and all these different songs. When I started buying CDs I would play them in the car, and stop and skip through my favourite songs, always trying to make my own radio show. Even now when I’m in my own car I get to have playlists of all different genres and moods. So, when I came to Sheridan this year and found out there was a radio show, I was excited. After a few meetings, we decided on a theme and idea for my show, “Sam Stays Inside”. The idea of the show was based on those car rides as a kid, getting to play music I really liked for other people.
Once we were done the planning and I had picked the music, no amount of practicing in front of the mirror would prepare me for talking on live radio. Even though there was no one else in the room, and I couldn’t see the faces of who was listening, it was still terrifying. Over time it has gotten better, but I still feel nervous every time, as I don’t want to disappoint those who are listening.
Overall, my time with my own radio show has been an exciting journey so far, getting to look for music and talk about albums that I love. I can’t wait to see what radio will continue to hold in store for me, and am excited to show everyone all the new music that I’ve found in the coming weeks.
